About

My research interests are based in India and include dress, fashion, and the social processes of film production, with special focus on questions of the co-option of commodities in media industries, the making of film costume, and fashion and performance in film. I have recently begun investigating the relationship between the materiality of costume and the immaterial "realities" they help create on screen, with particular attention being paid to costume aging and distressing. Comparative research in North American industries is also a part of my work. I am currently preparing a book on Hindi film costume titled "Fashioning Bollywood: Making and Meaning in Hindi film costume."
